The material research within MIRSURG will focus only on nonlinear optical crystals. OP-GaAs provides a unique opportunity to develop new mid-IR OPO devices based on a material developed in Europe. This effort relies on a technology which is at present also pursued by other leading groups in the world. As such, OP-GaAs will play the major role in the material research within MIRSURG. On the other hand, periodically poled oxide materials of the KTP family, with specially designed properties, are interesting for the first stage of the cascaded schemes. The growth and characterization of this family of crystals will also be a part of the material studies in the project. These efforts will be complemented with the characterization and evaluation of several more rarely used wide band-gap semiconductors (obtained from external cooperation) to be used in the OPO schemes for direct conversion from the 1 µm to 6.45 µm.
